Marine Animals In The Spotlight On The Pacific Ocean Of The USA

November 19, 2019 by John J Gentry Leave a Comment

Californa Elephant Seals Seaside

Massive Northern Elephant Seals At Piedras Blanca San Simeon California

These Massive Northern Elephant Seals live in the warm waters of the California Pacific Ocean and Northern Baja California.Much of their life is spent at sea, only coming in to remote and rocky beaches during times of breeding, and when they give birth. They also come into these areas when they are ready to molt. The majority of their life they live at sea.

There was a time when thousands upon thousands Elephant Seals lived in The Pacific, then in the 1800’s they were slaughtered till less than 100 Seals. All this for their blubber which gave a valuable oil. Both the US and Mexico protect them now and there are as many as 160,000 living Seals in the Pacific again.

These massive animals can be fun to watch, as they are quite comical at times.

These Harbor Seals are at play and having a lot of fun. When fishing, they can dive more than a quarter mile for their dinner. They love Halibut! They are also able to fish for almost an hour under the water, when necessary.

These Northern Sea Lions are many times confused with the California Sea Lions. They are much larger than their California Cousins, often grow to 11 feet long and can weigh as much as 2,500 pounds.

When traveling on the West Coast from Alaska to California, keep diligent watch and who knows what you will see. There are many different types of Marine Animals that live in the Pacific. The next time you come, take a leisurely drive up Highway 101 from California to Washington. It follows the beach side most of the time. Have fun and begin building your own collection of Amazing Marine Animals.

Denali National Park and Preserve In Alaska

June 9, 2019 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

Welcome Denali National Park
Welcome to Denali National Park

Welcome to Denali National Park Alaska and Reserve In Alaska

Denali State Park Alaska is a small piece of Alaskan Paradise. It’s the tallest peak is Mt.McKinley. Mt. McKinley is revered by the Tanaina Indians. “Kesugi” is an Indian word in the Tanaina dialect which means “The Ancient One.” It is interesting that Denali in the Tanana dialect means “The High One.” Denali is the original name for Mt. McKinley. Mt. McKinley is 20,320 feet high and is the highest mountain peak in North America.

“HISTORY

Although generations of Athabascans had wandered through what is now the park, the first permanent settlement was established in 1905, when a gold miners’ rush gave birth to the town of Kantishna. A year later, naturalist and noted hunter Charles Sheldon was stunned by the beauty of the land and horrified at the reckless abandon of the miners and big-game hunters. Sheldon returned in 1907 and traveled the area with guide Harry Karstens in an effort to set up boundaries for a proposed national park. Sheldon was successful as the area was established as Mount McKinley National Park in 1917 with Karstens serving as the park’s first superintendent. It was designated an international biosphere reserve in 1976. As a result of the 1980 Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, the park was enlarged to more than 6 million acres and renamed Denali National Park and Preserve. In 2015 President Barack Obama officially renamed Mt. McKinley to Denali, its Athabascan given name meaning “the Tall One.” Denali now comprises an area slightly larger than the state of Massachusetts and is ranked as one of Alaska’s top attractions.” (8. Travel Alaska)

Denali State Park Alaska is over 325 acres of State Park. It is located in Alaska, America’s most northern state. On one side it borders the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The borough is on the east side of the Denali (Old Name Mckinley National Reserve)Park and does allow people to see the Denali mountain from several viewpoints.

There are three of Alaska’s finest log cabins available for nightly rental. The park is open all during the year. It can be reserved and paid for through the Matanuska-Susitna Area Headquarters in Wasilla. It can also be reserved at The  Information Center in Anchorage, Alaska.

Denali National Park Map

The first cabin is a log cabin with a sod roof. It can be reached during the summer by car. The second log cabin has an awesome view of Mt. McKinley, Alaska’s highest mountain. It is accessible by car during the summer, but the last leg of the journey is a 1/2 mile walk to the cabin itself. It can also be reached in the summer by canoe or kayak. The third cabin is only 70 yards from the second. It has a fantastic view of Kesugi Ridge. All of the cabins sleep 6 people. Winter access varies with current weather conditions for all the cabins.

Camping is also available at the Byers Lake Campground. Canoe and Kayak rentals are available from the Denali Southside River Guides. Firewood can be bought from the camp host. The lake does not allow any motorized boats or aircraft in the area.

All of these photographs and videos are from our numerous excursions to the park and we encourage you the reader to share and to use them. We only ask that you give us a link back to this site so we can continue to share our stories and adventures about this wonderful place for many years to come.

Denali State Park Information and Reservations

“The towering granite spires and snowy summits of Denali National Park and Preserve straddles 160 miles of the Alaska Range and display so much elevation they are often lost in the clouds. Dominating this skyline is North America’s highest peak; Denali ascends majestically to 20,310 feet and is one of the most awe-inspiring sights in Alaska. Approximately 400,000 intrepid travelers journey to Denali National Park and Preserve each year, primarily between late May and early September.”(8. Travel Alaska)

There are several ways to contact the park or to arrange reservations if your planning on using the facilities. Remember the park does have an entry fee but if you have one of the access passes make sure to let them know so they can record your visit. This helps them to estimate the number of visitors and money is allocated to improve different areas of the park based on this information.

Denali State Park Alaska is waiting for the outdoor enthusiast and adventurists in spirit. If you travel through Canada on the Alaska Highway, a passport is required. Come enjoy Alaska’s Denali and all she has to offer and be prepared for the weather and wildlife. Come prepared and plan well for this awesome experience and vacation for those who love nature.

Another mode of transportation used by people from around the world is the Alaska railroad. Visitors can embark from Wittier, Anchorage airport or from Fairbanks and stip right inside the park. Various resorts, hotels, and others have the ability to pick you up and to take you where you need to go.

Directly from the Alaska Railroad website, we have this piece of useful information. and links to various information you the reader might need.”Given the long history of the Alaska Railroad and Denali National Park, it’s no wonder that Denali is so accessible for train travelers. Upon arrival to the Denali Depot, passengers are met by shuttle buses from Denali hotels and lodges (see our recommendations below). The many activities on offer to explore the Park – Denali flightseeing, river rafting, tundra golf and more – also provide complimentary shuttle services.”(11. Alaska Railroad Denali Station)

Denali Highway Alaska
Denali Highway Alaska

The Denali Highway

The Alaska Denali highways provide a unique opportunity to view Alaska’s nature in it’s prime with little interference from Man. The highway is maintained but if you are coming by rental car you should also take some precautions. First, make sure the tires look good and have your windshield wiper fluid full because you’re going to have a lot of window dust. Second Alaska can be unforgiving and roads being damaged, washout or closed for construction can happen. So with this being said it’s a good idea to have food, water, and some basic camping gear on hand. Also if your planning to go up into the farthest points of the road or the preserve make sure your gas take is topped off. Also, consider having some emergency gas on hand just in case. As you drive along you will see many different types of animals and it’s critical that you never feed these animals or touch them in any way. By doing so they will associate humans with food and for bears, this means the Rangers will have to put them down.

“This sparsely-traveled, mostly gravel highway offers a taste of wild Alaska and wide-open vistas of mountains, glaciers, tundra, forests, lakes, and rivers. The 133-mile road connects Paxson Lodge on the Richardson Highway with the Cantwell junction on the Parks Highway. Only the first 21 miles west of the Richardson Highway and 3 miles east of Cantwell Junction is paved. The road climbs to elevations over 4000 feet offering birders relatively easy access to alpine habitats. Posted trailheads on the eastern portion of the road mark good starting points for off-road travel and wildlife viewing. Several canoe routes are also accessible from the highway. Tangle Lakes at the headwaters of the Delta River is a popular launching area for canoeists. Most of the land along the highway is publicly owned. The federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) maintains some trails and camping facilities along the way. The highway is generally open from mid-May to October 1. Do not take a vehicle on the road outside of these dates as snowdrifts can block your way and leave you stranded. Carry extra food, water, and camping equipment as well as a spare tire and jack while driving on this road. Be prepared as help may not be readily available.” (1 Alaska Department ofFish and Game)

Very few people who visit Alaska fully grasp the size and diversity the state has to offer and this guide will help you to be better prepared and to travel the Denali highway. It is road trips such as these help to bind us together and to bring us closer to nature.

Touches Of Yesterday In The High Tundra At Denali National Public Grounds and Preserve

One of the marvelous delights is to just wander throughout the park.  On one such trek, the team came upon this old and well-used outhouse of days gone by. Even though many outhouses are still in use, this one had seen better days. For those in need of its services, it is a blessing in the middle of nowhere. Before this park was monitored people still used it for hunting and trapping even if it might not have been legal at the time. Today the park is very monitored and controlled by the federal national park system and employees. Also, the University of Alaska system has a close relationship with the park and the employees you maintain it all year.

Autumn in Denali National Park and Reserve in Alaska has a tremendous amount to offer and just driving down the main road can give you almost 100 miles of nature to see. We have gone here many different times of the year and the animal activity changes with the seasons. Lately, we have been seeing many more caribou and the bird wildlife seems to be much more active as well. Autumn is a special time for Alaska as the animals prepare for winter and become very active.

Pleasant Surprises At Denali National Park In Alaska - A field with a mountain in the background - Geology

While traveling through the park on an autumn day, this beautiful view presented itself. The surrounding hills had a fresh layer of snow. Snow begins to fall in the early to mid-autumn, as much of the park is very high. Once the first snowfall arrives, it is only a matter of time till the hills will be completely covered by this magnificent white stuff. Every corner and around each and every hill is a special treat for nature lovers like and for those who are looking for another photo opportunity.

The caribou you see at the end of the above video was found on the main park road going into the park at about mile 15. There was one main male who seemed to be looking out for this small group and he kept raising his head to smell us upwind of him. We waiting for some time until we started moving the vehicle forward so we could pass. What you cannot see from this small video is that we encountered three separate groups just along the main road alone and another out on the old ice by a hiking trail. They are active at different times of the year and will move around the park into different areas at different seasons. In the fall they will all group together and begin a migration to where they can eat in their winter grasslands.

The Denali National Park Food Experience

Come early and have your appetite ready, as this is a great place to eat Salmon. There are many kinds of local fish and other meats served, but the salmon is out of this world. While in Denali, a stop at this restaurant is a must and there are several others to choose from as well. Also, there a big lodge just in front of the park that has a more upscale restaurant if that is something you want. Healy also has a few “hole in the walls” and Roses (currently Open 2019) has a hardy breakfast and good coffee.

Along the main road of the park, there are numerous parking areas, and this allows you to get off the beaten path and to explore the many other small walking trails. In the spring the wildlife comes alive and the plants and trees have a fresh green look to them that is very beautiful. Pull off areas are along the main road for various photo opportunities so make sure to park off the road safely.

The spring thaw of the River and mountains Denali National Park
The spring thaw of the River and mountains Denali National Park

Springtime in Alaska is called the spring break up and that is when the ice within the numerous rivers melt and becoming raging rivers again. Many different springs shoot out of the ground and nature activity rises as the park is a crisp green.

Animals of Denali

The park is home to birds and various mammals to include a Caribou herd who roam the plains of the National Park free from hunting.

“Denali’s abundant and diverse wildlife are just as famous as its tallest mountain, Denali, which towers above the landscape at 20,310’ tall. In truth, although the park’s namesake is a mountain, Denali was the first national park created to protect wildlife. Now, this park is home to 39 species of mammals, 169 species of birds, and 1 lonely species of amphibian.” (5 National Park Service Denali)

Caribou

Caribou-Denali-National-Park

The Denali Caribou weigh in between 175–400 lbs, these caribou are much smaller than moose, and their brown cream coats can be a very rich color during the summer. The racks of these caribou are very distinctive and oversized as compared to the rest of their bodies. Both the male and female caribou grow antlers with the males’ antlers being larger Pregnant females keep their antlers, with males and other females shedding theirs in the winter or early spring. Spruce Grouse

Spruce grouse, or (Chanachites canadensis), is often known as the spruce hens or the spruce chickens. They live in the forest as lower level dwellers and are throughout the Denali area park and surrounding areas of the state. Here in Denali Park, they can be identified with their brown-tipped tail.  They are dark, fatter looking birds and can be hard to spot unless they moving around.  Many times you could be walking beside them so always make sure to look carefully as you hike around the park. (3 Denali Education Center)

Willow Ptarmigan

Willow Ptarmigan of Denali National Park
Willow Ptarmigan of Denali National Park

Alaska’s state bird is the willow ptarmigan or (Lagopus lagopus), a very sociable bird that is common in the grasslands across Alaska’s regions statewide. In 1955 Alaska leadership of the Territory were drafting the constitution for statehood asked Alaska school children and they chose the willow ptarmigan as a symbol or state bird of the future Great State. It became the official state bird of the state when Alaska was made the 49th state in 1960. (2)

The willow ptarmigan has built-in camouflage as protection against predators and changes its plumage from light brown in the summer, and to snow white in winter. Another distinctive feature, its feathered feet, helps this sedentary bird negotiate the frozen ground. The willow ptarmigan is the largest of three “Arctic grouse” found in Alaska, which also includes the rock and the white-tailed ptarmigan.(2)

“Ptarmigan are sociable in winter and usually feed and roost close together in the snow. In spring, they travel to their breeding grounds in flocks of several thousand. These flocks disperse in summer as the male’s elbow for foraging room on the tundra. Unlike other grouse, the male willow ptarmigan often takes responsibility for the young, defending them against predators.” (1 Alaska Department of Fish and Game)

“The willow ptarmigan occupies a broad range throughout Canada, Scandinavia, Finland, and Russia and is closely related to the famous red grouse of Scotland.” (2)

Moose Denali National Park Alaska
Moose Denali National Park Alaska

The Alaska Moose is a very large animal and is unique in its size to Alaska and some of the Yukon territory.

“Moose (Alces alces) are the largest members of the deer family, and Alaska moose is the largest of all. They may appear gangly and awkward, but these imposing creatures can run at speeds of up to 35 mph and swim at 6 mph for up to two hours. A large bull can weigh up to 1,600 pounds and stand over seven feet tall at the shoulder. During the breeding season or “rut,” males joust with one another by bringing their massive antlers together and pushing. Cows with calves can be fiercely protective.” (7. Alaska Department of Fish and Game)

The park with its rich resources has many Grizzly bears that will roam around the park looking for food. Normally they are safe to look at from a distance but it’s important to not feed them and do not have food for them to smell.

“Brown bears (also known as grizzlies) and black bears are common across many areas of Alaska. They are closely related to each other and to the polar bear, which is classified as a marine mammal. A brown bear (Ursus arctos) is usually larger than a black bear (Ursus americanus), has a more prominent hump on its shoulder, less prominent ears, and longer, straighter front claws. Longer claws are useful for digging roots or excavating small burrowing animals. Black bears’ shorter claws are more efficient for climbing trees.” (6. Alaska Department of Fish and Game)

The Denali Park and Preserve aim to preserve this piece of Alaska for people around the world to enjoy and to remain a safe habitat for the animals to roam free. Alaska is by far the last frontier of the United States and it’s National Parks help to keep our footprint here within the country in better balance. How we preserve and use these lands will speak volumes to the following generation to come.

Trace Fossils

Even though today it is our focus to be on the current animal population it’s important to not lose focus on the distant past and to learn everything the remote past of the park has to offer. Ichnofossils, also known as trace fossils are on display here at the center and can educate yourself on this unique science about the park that few even realize have been found there. Here is an excerpt below directly from the center in reference to this photograph.

“First fossil footprint
During a geology field camp in 2005, Dr. Paul McCarthy from the University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Geology and Geophysics rested his hand on an outcrop of the Cantwell Formation and spoke to a small group of students about how similar-aged rocks commonly preserve dinosaur tracks in other places. When he suggested that the group should keep an eye out for fossils, student Susi Tomsich pointed near the professor’s hand and asked, “Like that one?” That original theropod track is now on display at the Murie Science and Learning Center in Denali. ” (10. Adventures In Mobile Alabama

July 30, 2018 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

                                                             The Mobile Tensaw River Delta

The amazing Mobile Tensaw River Delta is the largest of several deltas of it’s kind in the State of Alabama USA. Alabama has many wetlands, but this is an area of 266,000 acres. That is the size of some cities, or roughly 40 miles by 10 miles in size, or 400 square miles. It is the second largest wetland in the Contiguous United States Of America. This spectacular wetland is so large that most people will be able to find some place within this breathtaking wetland to enjoy a few hours. Come a long with us as we discover the Mobile Tensaw River Delta, the gateway to Alabama’s greatest wetland.

This is an area where the river converges on the sea. Here is a jungle so dense and vast with rivers that inter weave and cause islands to form, both big and small. These small uninhabited islands are home to some of the largest and most dangerous animals in the world.  Here the bears and alligators run free and wild. Bull sharks rule the sea and Bobcats wait for their next meal in a tree. In this jungle of Alabama you will find feral hogs that are huge and five major poisonous snakes. While it awaits our desire for exploration and adventure, unless you understand the Jungle and it’s inhabitants,  it is best to go with a trained guide who knows the way and life of the jungle.

Here, in this grand delta, you can discover the 300 species of birds that call this magnificent environment home. It is also filled with an unbelievable number of insects, numerous varieties of amphibians and spectacular reptiles. All these find their habitation in an area where all the water from the hills comes rushing down into the sea. This is an area that is constantly flooding, and yet, it has a mysterious side that calls to you. Come, and let’s explore this magical land of the deep South. This is the wilderness land of the Mobile Tensaw River Delta.

This profound and mysterious area is like a big screen drama. Weekly, if not daily, the environment of the delta changes. Fresh water is constantly rushing and prodding it’s way to the sea, and the sea often pushes back. On one occasion the delta may have high levels of salt, thus attracting animals that desire a home with much salt in the water. While others come during the year when the rivers push the hardest into the sea, and the water is fresh. What an amazing theater of nature!

What happens during the spring floods is spooky, mysterious, and can be dangerous. The little creatures of the jungle scamper for the cliffs and bluffs that surround the delta. This is a time when the bushy tail squirrels and rabbits join the big bears in the forests and highlands that surround the delta region. Now that they have scrambled into tall trees and other places of safety, they are able to survive the flooding wetlands. This is not a good time for these land animals in the delta, but those who spend their time in the water arrive to take their place. The Mobile Tensaw River Delta is now muddy and at flood stage.

The Mobile Tensaw River Delta At Flood Stage

This is an area of many amazing trails and marvelous landmarks. But spring is not the season to hike these trails through the woods. Trails that are safe and fun at other times, have become muddy and dangerous, as the flood water rages throughout the delta forest. There is a season for everything in the jungle, and this is the season for fishing for Bream, a challenging and harder to catch angler’s favorite in this Bayou.

As spring floods end and June is on the horizon, you can begin to see and hear thousands of insects buzzing day and night. This might be a good time to apply your mosquito repellent. During this time, when the air is warming up everywhere, this jungle climate becomes warm and muggy. A perfect environment for those pesky mosquitoes has now been created. But for those who come to watch the birds, this is their season. Many species of birds call out to each other as they mate and lay their eggs. Now is the time that bird watchers flood the jungles of the delta wilderness, This is the time that the jungle becomes a bird watchers paradise.

As August arrives, the scene changes yet again and the fishermen wanting to catch the big guys have arrived and others come for the smaller fish of the gulf. The Gulf of Mexico is teaming with Spanish Mackerel, those delightful Tarpon, and giant sharks. It has become the perfect time for Gulf Fishing charters to make their way around the Gulf, and out to sea. During the same period, the rivers of the Delta have higher salt levels as the sea has pushed it’s creatures deep into the rivers. So the fishermen arrive, setting the pots for blue crabs, and looking for Shrimp, Trout, Red Fish, and even the Mangrove Flounder.  Now is the time that the Bayou has plenty of freshwater. This is the fishermen’s time to shine. The Bayou has become a fishermen’s paradise!

The over-story of the jungle is made up of several favorites of the Americas.  You will find  the American Chestnut Tree that is loaded with chestnuts to roast, Southern Oaks, Mountain Laurels, Red Maples, and the Birch trees, all growing tall and strong. Fall is the perfect time of year to discover the amazing Passion flower, and the potato beans that wind their vines up and over the trees of the jungle. This is the perfect time for those who want to discover the flowers, tress, and amazing under-story of the jungle. Cypress Trees, whose oils are precious, grow tall in the jungle swamp. By spring the small yellow flowers of the Saint John’s Wort are blooming. Whereever there are Cypress Trees, you will find Saint John’s Wort winding around their trunks. This is the time of the Medicinal Herbalist and those who hunt the jungles for their healing herbs and trees.

And what can you find in the bogs that are scattered throughout the wilderness surrounding Mobile? This is an area that is always wet and surrounds the wetlands. The bogs are on hillsides and near springs that are constantly wet with flowing water. It is in these super damp areas that herbalists descend upon to gather the Pitcher plants, only one of the re-nouned resident plants and herbs of the bog.

Now that we have explored the delta areas and the bogs, it is time to visit the Port of Alabama. Not a great day for seeing a sunset, but the stormy clouds add character to the port.

  1. Melt the clarified butter in a large saucepan over medium heat until a pinch of flour sprinkled into the oil will just begin to bubble. Whisk in the flour to form a thick paste the consistency of cake frosting. Continue cooking, whisking constantly, until the flour turns the color of melted chocolate, about 45 minutes. Slowly whisk in the water and bring to a simmer. Whisk until no lumps of roux remain; set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-low heat. Stir in the onion, okra, and green bell pepper. Cook and stir until the vegetables have softened and begun to brown, about 30 minutes.
  3. Stir the tomato paste into the okra mixture until no lumps of tomato paste remain. Add the tomatoes, garlic, salt, black pepper, bay leaves, seafood seasoning, and roux-thickened water. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 1 hour.
  4. Stir the shrimp, crab, and oysters into the gumbo, recover, and cook 20 minutes longer.

ExploreTraveler Presents: Exploring Jordan Via Photo Tour and Guide

February 27, 2018 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

Photo of the Day ~ The Ancient Nabataean City Of Petra

From time to we like to group allot of articles on a single subject, and present them as a small guide. The title under the picture is a link to another post with additional information. Most of the photo’s within this guide are from an area centered around Petra, and the deserts that surround this site. We hope you enjoy this small tour from our own eyes, and just maybe we inspire you to go there for yourself.

In Southwest Jordan you will find an amazing desert, colorful, extremely hot, with rugged mountains and deep canyons. Amid all this natural beauty you will find the city of Petra, built during the time of the Nabataean Kingdom between 100 B.C. to 106 A.D. For years Petra was a major trading center and capital city of the empire of the Nabataean people. Then for centuries it lay in ruin, empty, and forgotten. The city was lost for centuries. Now this beautiful hidden city is a UNESCO World Heritage Center.

Photo of the Day ~ The Bedouin culture of Petra

The Nabataeans occupied Petra till the close of the Roman Empire. The Al B’doul tribe  is said to be among those descended from the Nabataeans, who built the city of Petra.  This Bedouin tribe, the Al B’doul, lived in Petra for more than 170 years. They built their lives among the tombs and caves, feeling a close attachment to the city. Some of the members of the tribe were relocated to a city built just for them near-by. Others in this tribe still lives in the ancient valley, clinging to traditional Bedouin life.

Photo of the Day ~ Crossing the Red Sea in Aqaba, Jordan

To visit the Red Sea at Aqaba, Jordan is a compelling inner drive. Many pass Aqaba by, but here you will find water that is calm and crystal clear. It seems like you can see forever. The Red Sea is a thriving sea with a large variety of amazing marine life. This is a world class snorkeling site. If you enjoy marine life, spend a few hours snorkeling at the Red Sea,  Jordan’s only beach.

Photo of the Day ~ Exploring the desert valley of Wadi Rum

Embark on the adventure of a life time exploring the Valley Of The Moon. At times you can rightfully ask if you are still on planet earth. As you wander through this brutal but astonishing desert, you will see desert colors in the deep oranges. It looks like a freshly painted canvas, painted as only a master artist can do. Put on your sun hat, wrap your head  in a scarf, grab plenty of water,  and let’s explore this amazing and dramatic desert.

Photo of the Day ~ Timeless Splendor in the desert of Wadi Rum

These camels are valuable members of the Royal Desert Forces. The  Bedouins saddle up their camels on a regular basis to reach those areas of the desert that are too remote for trucks and 4 X 4’s to patrol. The camels are also often paraded around for tourists to enjoy. Anyone in the area that has a female camel that needs to be bred, may bring them by the Patrol Headquarters. This is a free service provided by the Royal Desert Forces for residents.

Photo of the Day ~ The Amazing Ruins Of The Greco-Roman City Of Gerasa

At Jerash the first thing you note is the condition of the ruins. What a marvelous site. The city of Gerasa was also called Antioch and is found in the North of Jordan.  This magnificent site shows the quality of the city. It is indeed the best of the Roman ruins we have seen outside of Italy.  You will find the ancient city among green hills and valleys filled with olive, plum, fig, and other fruit trees.

Wadi Rum….Timeless Splendor

Wadi Rum Desert landscapes, where the deep red rocks seem to protrude seamlessly into the dark blue sky. It is a land of fascinating landscapes and timeless treasures. Known as the Valley of the Moon, this amazing valley is cut into the beautiful red sandstone and granite. Timeless splendor, level headed people, and amazing shades of Autumn greet you on your desert exploration.

Photo of the Day ~ Beautiful Jordanian Sunset

Photo of the Day ~ The Lost City Of Petra In Jordan

Deep in the rugged pink sandstone hills, surrounding one of the harshest deserts in the world, you will find one of the Jewels of the ancient world. Welcome to Jordan and the unique city of Petra.

Photo of the Day ~ Adventuring Into The Wadi Rum Desert Of Jordan

This astonishing Red Desert is surrounded by amazing red sandstone mountains and made complete with amazing canyons. Walking through the desert you will see nothing until you come upon a tent of friendly Bedouins inviting you to join them for tea.

Deserts Comes To Life With Tea

The Deserts springs to life, as tea is served. Have you ever considered exploring some of the hottest deserts in the world? How about taking a break and having tea under a goat haired tent in the desert? Have you ever thought that it would be refreshing and make you cooler?

The Secret Mysteries Of The Ancient City Of Petra ~ Part One

This is the magnificent entrance into the city of Petra, where history, ancient stories, folklore, and archaeology all come together in an ancient city, clothed in mystery. The entrance, designed by nature, is narrow and provided security and safety for an ancient people. You have just traveled through the awe-inspiring Valley Of Moses, looking at the amazing mountains of rose, red, and white sandstone, beholding the shadows of the mountains across the desert and then you come to the gateway of this mysterious city, the narrow and magnificent siq. If you look at the photo above, you will see just how enormously tall this entrance is, as both humans and animals appear to be quite small at it’s base.

The Secret Mysteries Of The Ancient City Of Petra ~ Part 2

The sandstone hills hold mysteries over 2000 years old. Mysteries of the fortress built by the Nabatacans.  It seemed like nothing could ever touch it. The shadows of the towering ziq envelope you as you make your way through this mile long winding path and into the city. The first thing you see is the facade of the Treasury. The Treasury was most likely a temple built to the many gods of this enormous civilization. But if you let your eyes feast to either side of this first building, with all it’s grandeur, you will see the many carved quarters and caves that are intricately carved into these amazing sandstone cliffs.

The Secret Mysteries Of The Ancient City Of Petra ~ Part 3

The spectacular amphitheater in Petra is amazing in it size, seating between 6,000-8,000 people. Can you imagine the excitement of the crowd as they watched events in this massive amphitheater? The amphitheater was built previous to the time of the Roman occupation of Petra. This very unique theater was carved into the sandstone rocks.

The Secret Mysteries Of The Ancient City Of Petra ~ Part 4

Magnificent Boulders and cliffs of tinted sandstone greet you as you come near to the city. If you take time to look at the layers of reds, browns, oranges, and yellows of the rocks, cliffs, columns and the tombs themselves, you will be amazed. Because of the uniqueness of the sandstone cliffs that they are carved from, there are no two tombs or facades exactly the same.

The Secret Mysteries Of The Ancient City Of Petra ~ Conclusion

As our five part Petra adventure comes to a close, we take time to look at the upper levels of the Al-Khazneh or The Treasury. Here the mysteries of the lost city grow as we wonder just what this magnificent building carved out of the sandstone cliffs was used for. Most seem to favor that it was some type of a temple for the many gods of Petra after the many invaders of Rome took control, but there is also the theory that in the beginning it was an elaborate tomb.

In most cases the shell is narrower than it is long. The outside of the mussel shell can be black, dark blue, and different shades of brown. On the inside it is silvery with touches of other colors.

The Spectacular Coral Reefs Of The Philippines

The Philippine Islands are surrounded by over 10,000 miles of Coral Reefs. The reefs are made up of tiny marine creatures, some of them very unique to this area. These reefs provide food for all the larger marine animals and the large variety of fish that call the area around the reefs home. There are over 2,000 species of fish that live in the reefs of the Philippines.

The people of the Philippines also directly benefit from these reefs in many ways. One area, of course, is fishing. Fish is a major stable in the Philippine diet. Fish are also sold commercially.  It also provides a break for the waves and prevents major erosion of the coastline areas. The reefs help protect the coastal communities from powerful waves, by acting as a buffer zone. This is of major importance during typhoons and other storms. The reefs also bring in a lot of tourism, especially in the snorkeling and diving communities. This helps to create jobs in all the related service industries.

The Church Of The Annunciation In Nazareth, Israel

The Church Of The Annunciation In Nazareth, Israel

The Church of the Annunciation, according to tradition, is the site where the Angel Gabriel spoke to Mary in Nazareth, Israel, announcing that she would bring forth a child. The site where the church is located is over the area of what is believed to be the house of Mary. The Biblical text of the annunciation is found in Luke 1: 26-38.

“And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.  And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:  And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?  And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her”.

The History Of The Church Of The Annunciation

Archaeological  excavations of this site have revealed the earlier constructions of four churches. During the mid 4th Century CAD there was evidence of what might have been an altar in the Grotto, which is thought to have been the home of Mary. This would have been the earliest of the churches.

The Church of the Annunciation was commissioned by Emperor Constantine. There is historical evidence to show that it was most likely directed by his mother, Saint Helena. There is also a motif that seems to support the idea that the church was founded by Deacon Canon from Jerusalem. The church was most likely completed in the year of 470 AD. This building was completely destroyed in 638 AD by the Arab invasion.

In the year 1109 the Crusaders arrived in the Holy Land and began a new church on this same site. A little more than a thousand years latter, this beautiful church was once again destroyed.

The Franciscans built a new church on this same site in 1730. It was latter enlarged in 1877. This church was demolished in 1955 to make way for this latest building.

The current building was completed in 1969. It was designed by one of the world’s greatest designers, Giovanni Muzio. There has been an ongoing problem since 1997, when a mosque was built in front of the current church.
