The Thrill Of Hiking Tiger Mountain In The High Mountains Of Taiwan

May 31, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

mountain hiking

                                                 The Misty Mountains Of Taipei

Like all coastal communities and islands, there is a fine mist that fills the early morning air. Even in the high mountains of Taipei, you are never far from the sea. So rise, and put on your walking shoes. It is time to hike the high misty mountains.

Today, one of the mountains that are known as The Four Beasts Mountains is calling our name. These mountains are named for the beasts they resemble and are just east of the city of Taipei, Taiwan. Individually these mountains are called Tiger Mountain (虎山), Lion Mountain [獅山], Elephant Mountain [象山],  and Panther Mountain [豹山]. Together, we call them the Four Beasts Mountains. Here you will find easy hiking trails and magnificent views of the city of Taipei. There are signs in both English and Chinese along the way. You will find them well maintained and mostly paved. How many ways can you see Taipei 101? If you rise early for your morning hike, you will see the sun rise over the city. And yes, you will see the city through the early morning mist.

                                                           Tiger Mountain (虎山)

For those with little hiking experience, Tiger Mountain  (虎山) is a fun choice. Tiger Mountain Trail is a short hike. It is fun and safe for all ages. Tiger Mountain is also good for those that are short on time. It is one of the shortest hikes with amazing views of the city below. You are able to drive right up to the trailhead. The hike to the top takes only about 30 minutes. There are numerous viewing platforms as you go. At these platforms, you will get many photo opportunities of the city below. Only in the high city mountains, will you find such views!

The first viewing platform on Tiger Mountain takes only about five minutes from the start of the trailhead.  The views are fabulous! The next viewpoint is about 10 more minutes up the trail. On this segment of the trail, however, you will need to maneuver a sturdy and but safe staircase. It is homemade and looks scary, but it is easy walking and safe. The views are marvelous! The hike is enjoyable.

If you are wanting to get photos of Taipei as the sun rises, be sure to take a flashlight for before dawn navigation. This mountain is not lighted like some of the others. As you come back down the mountain, be sure to stop in for some Bubble Tea. It is the perfect end to a fantastic hike.

One Of Many Bubble Tea Shops

Bubble Tea originated in Taiwan and is a very unique beverage. It is not the national drink of Taiwan, but you can often wonder why it is not. There is a bubble tea shop on every corner, it seems. Bubble tea is like coffee is to Americans. You just got to have it!  It is a unique taste, but extremely good. It is only proper to end your magnificent early morning hike with a cup of fresh Bubble Tea.

Now that you have had your early morning hike and a fresh cup of Bubble Tea, it is time for a hearty Taiwanese breakfast. So relax and enjoy the day, as it will just get better.  Take time to explore the many sights of City the of Taipei, Taiwan. Have a pleasant day!

Beitou Thermal Valley In NorthernTaiwan

October 23, 2015 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

#Beitou lush green thermal valley in northern #Taiwan

Beitou Thermal Valley In Northern Taiwan

Beitou Thermal Valley is a Northern Taiwan Jewel. It is a pearl of delight. It is a rare gem found in Taipei. This geothermal valley is a volcanic crater that is filled with piping hot natural sulfuric spring water. This rare mineral content causes the water to be a beautiful shade of jade green. Locals sometimes call it Jade Springs Valley, because it is one of the greenest valleys in the world. The different colors of green are amazing!  This rare combination of minerals can only be found in one other location worldwide. These same beautiful green waters can also be found in Akita, Japan. Beitou Thermal Valley is filled with lush green vegetation and healing green sulfuric spring water. What beauty can be found in the Beitou Thermal Valley.

Those that love to bathe in natural hot springs are probably thinking that they are bound for some healing bathe waters. Not so! The water can get up to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Unfortunately, this renders the hot springs itself unsuitable for bathing. However, further away from the spring, bathhouses have been built and the water-cooled to a suitable temperature for a fantastic bathing experience.

This sulfuric water is believed to be quite healing to the skin. People with all types of skin problems have come here to jump-start a cure. The water is considered almost miraculous! It is a healing experience for many with dry and unhealthy skin.

Depending on the wind, the steam comes up from the water and engulfs you in thick sulfuric steam. This is how the Beitou Thermal Valley got its other name, Hell Valley. This beautiful valley can be so engulfed in this thick steam, that some feel like you can hardly breathe. However, the steam can be quite healing to the lungs. The steam makes for a spectacular photo event. The sulfuric steam is also very healing to the skin of those who are surrounded by this piping hot vapor. It is a beautiful valley! It is relaxing! It is healing!

Beitou Thermal Valley would seem to have a very hot source of heat below the earth. Unfortunately, it is no longer hot enough to sustain future volcanic activity. The days of this beautiful thermal valley are quickly coming to an end. This is perhaps one of the best reasons to make this the year you plan a Beitou Thermal Valley Adventure. Don’t wait till this becomes modern-day history.

Beitou Thermal Valley is actually located in Taipei, Taiwan.  It is an amazing valley and you have not even left Taipei. This makes it very easy to get there via the MRT. You can sit back and enjoy the train ride. In less than an hour, you will be in this amazing valley. You have left the bustle of the city! The noise of this mega city is gone. But you are still in the greater Taipei area. Beitou Thermal Valley is a Taipei City Adventure.

Less than an hour from the city center of Taipei will find you soaking in rare sulfuric hot springs. It is surrounded by a lush green park. There are bubbling springs. Beautiful bridges and countless walking paths grace the park. The park has every shade of green that you can imagine.  This is an adventure in Taiwan and Japanese history. What a way to relax!

Beitou Thermal Valley was a haven for the Japanese during their occupation of Taiwan. Parks, bridges, and walking paths were built. The springs emitted a sulfuric aroma. It would heal your lungs as you took long walks in the city. The Japanese opened countless hot spring bathhouses throughout the area. Beitou Park was the perfect place to enjoy a day in nature.

After the Japanese occupation came to an end, this park was neglected until the 1990s. At this time, Taipei City decided to renovate the old Japanese structures. They began to restore the beauty of the area. It is now a beautiful place to spend the day. Experience tranquility and peace. Relax from the rat race of the city. Go for a relaxing walk. Sit by the stream. There are beautiful paths, bubbly steams, and awesome bathe houses.  All this within an easy train commute.

Any day is the perfect day to explore Beitou Thermal Valley. The bath houses are inexpensive.  The water is amazing! The air is fresh. The park is peaceful. Beitou Thermal valley is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Breath the fresh air. Take long healthy walks. Enjoy one of the natures rare hot springs. Make today the day, for a Beitou Thermal Valley Adventure.

Taipei, Taiwan: The City Seems To Rotate

January 22, 2015 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

Taipei
Taipei taiwan

Taipei, Taiwan: “Good Feng Shui Rotates,”

Taipei, Taiwan is the city of change. There is a Chinese proverb that says:”Good Feng Shui Rotates.” This is true of Taipei, as the best of the city seems to change each time you arrive. There is so much to do in and around Taipei! It is good to plan several days and then you will just scratch the service.

Almost a constant for first place is the Lungshan Temple. It is located near the Danshui River  west of the city. The building is over three centuries old and accommodates several Buddhist gods, including the goddess of mercy. Rich and poor come here to pray for protection and wellbeing. The temple is seldom empty, but on the 1st and 15th of every lunar month it is extremely busy. Be sure and notice the intricate hand carved details on this building. The temple has been restored and is a historical building in Taiwan. Fill your plate with Taiwanese history at the Lungshan Temple.

Be sure to take a walk along the underground shopping street in the Lungshan Temple MRT station. There are many quaint shops on this lower level shopping area. You will also see many fortune-tellers along the street. Temples and fortune tellers play a large role in Taiwan. Both the temples and the fortune tellers shape the culture of this island nation. In Taipei you will notice that every district has its own temple on the coroner.

In the same area is Snake Alley. You will find it on Huaxi Street. This is one of the strangest of the night markets. It is a very unique market with lots of living history. Snake meat, snake soup, and shots of snake blood are sold here. You might want to be careful what you buy! Years ago it was the location of the famous red light district and a place for gangsters. Now it is a modern night market and a tourist destination.

The Taipei 101 is always a top tourist location. Taipei 101 has 101 floors above ground and 5 floors underground. The architecture of the building is modern and has much symbolism. It has one of the best views in the city. It is in the Xinyi District of Taiwan. There is an awesome restaurant in the building. It has the best desert bar and it is so good. Taipei 101 is a tourist’s delight! Check out an earlier article on Taipei 101. http://explore1.wpengine.com/taipei-101-taiwan/

Eat local while in Taiwan. A personal favorite is the Beef Noodle Soup. You will find it all over Taiwan in every night market. There is also many variations of a Vegetable Soup. It is delicious! Another awesome dish is the Hot Pot! You can choose what you want in it and it is cooked at your table.  Many people seem to like the bowls of  Vermicelli Noodle Soup with oysters or braised pork intestines. It is topped with black vinegar, garlic and coriander. It also can be found in any night market. I personally did not try this local delicacy, but from the looks of the lines, it is a favorite.
