Taiwan Monkeys of Formosa Live In A Protected Habitat

Taiwan Monkeys (Taiwan’s Formosan Rock Monkeys) are the only monkey native to Taiwan. Taiwan’s Formosan Rock Monkeys are also known as Formosan Rock Macaque and Taiwanese Macaque. They live in the mountainous regions of northeastern and southwestern Taiwan. At one time it is believed that they may have lived nearer the sea coast. They likely were pushed back into the hills due to lack of vegetation and increased human activity. At times they can still be seen near the sea coast of Taiwan. They are generally found between 300 and 12,000 feet. They primarily prefer areas of mixed hardwood forests as well as bamboo and grasslands.

Some of the 22 known species of Macaques lack tails and they are often referred to as apes. These are true monkeys and have no relationship to the true apes. Taiwan’s Formosan Rock Monkeys generally are around 22-24 inches long and have moderately long tails of 17-18 inches. Taiwan’s Formosan Rock Monkey is brown or gray in color. One of the unique features of this monkey is the special pouches found in the cheeks. These pouches allow them to look for food and hoard it in their cheeks until they have returned to a safe location.

Taiwan Monkey Lifestyle and Interaction

Taiwan’s Monkeys have a very complex social chain and hierarchy. When a monkey of a lower level in this social structure has eaten berries or other morsels of food, they are stored in the pouch. If there are none left for a higher level monkey, then he may remove the berries from the lower level monkey’s pouch.

Formosan Rock Monkeys give birth to only one offspring per pregnancy. The gestation period is generally around 165 days. The Formosan Rock Monkey mates during the winter and gives birth in late spring or early summer. The younger females give birth every other year. The older females, those over the age of 9, give birth yearly. Most of the Formosan Rock Monkey’s nurse their offspring for approximately one year. The offspring usually are independent by the second year. Often permanent relationships are seen between the offspring and their mother.

Taiwan Monkeys (Formosa Rock Monkeys) are native to Taiwan. One of the most famous places to see this pesky monkey in his natural habitat is Shoushan National Nature Park in Kaohsiung. Formosan Rock ‪‎Monkey Adventure

Formosan Rock ‪‎Monkey Adventure has arrived! The place is Taiwan! The time is now! Come along with our team and explore the world of the Formosan Rock ‪‎Monkey! This little fellow, with such a big name, is Taiwan’s only native monkey. What a unique honor! Besides humans, the Formosan Rock ‪‎Monkey is the only native primate living on this beautiful island. This little money, with a long tail, and a brownish grey color, has the most amazing cheeks. Look at those little pouches! What are these strange cheeks for? Why they are food storage, of course! Work hard today, store your food wisely, and you will not go hungry tomorrow. What a wise little monkey!

This little monkey with his built-in food storage is extremely smart and resourceful. The Formosan Rock ‪‎Monkey has a custom-made pouch allowing him to grab his food and run! These specialized storage cheeks allow him to venture into strange places. He can then grab his food and “boggy on out of Dodge”! Watch as he takes his morsels back to the safety of the jungle canopy or a tall cliff. There he can get his bearings, gather his food, and safely enjoy. What a smart little money!

The Formosan Rock ‪‎Monkey lives in the beautiful Hardwood  Temperate Forest of Taiwan! He also likes the Bamboo Forests and the grasslands of the island. Nature has provided him with a million dollar home. These are some of the most fantastic hardwoods in the world. Imagine calling them home! As an added bonus, this pesky little money pays no rent for his 5 star accommodations! From the safety of the canopy of these tall trees, he can safely eat his bounty, and relax from a hard days work. Now that must be a home with a view!

The Formosan Rock ‪‎Monkey spends most of his time in these trees that he calls home. Only when out foraging in the grasslands do you see him on the ground. His diet consists of fruits, tender leaves and he loves his bamboo. He also enjoys flower buds, insects, and snails.  For desert, he loves bird eggs. It is in situations like this, that he puts his stolen eggs in his pouch and takes off for the forest. An angry mama bird is not a pleasant companion. The bigger the bird, the faster he must travel. The Formosan Rock ‪‎Monkey enjoys the cliffs at the edge of the island. This little fellow in the photo was enjoying the ocean view from the safety of the tall cliffs. Monkeys: Mischievous Rock Monkeys

Monkeys: Those Mischievous Rock Monkeys

Monkeys! Monkeys! Monkeys! Everywhere you look are those mischievous Rock Monkeys! They are agile and a blast to watch. They run through the trees performing their antics as they go. What performers they are! Welcome to the world of the Formosan Rock Monkey.  They are known by several names, Formosan Rock Macaque and Taiwanese macaque being two main local names. However the most famous is the Formosan Rock Monkey. These cute little fellows grow to be between 50-60 cm and usually weigh less than 12 kg. The females are usually the smallest and appear the most delicate. These monkeys are usually grey or brown and have long tails. The long tails help them swing through the trees. What fun they are!

The Formosan Rock Monkey is endemic to The Taiwan Islands and live in the mixed temperate rain-forests and the bamboo jungles. Can you imagine going for a walk and seeing these cute little fellows squawking in the trees? What a delight they are.  They love to forge in the grasslands, looking for tender shoots of grass, both stems and leaves and the fresh new buds. Then there are the delicacies of a fruit tree or insects. The Formosan Rock Monkey especially likes to dine on snails and bird eggs. They can spot a nest of eggs from afar and are quick to enjoy before the mother bird returns.

The Formosan Rock Monkey often finds himself in trouble. This cute little monkey is the only primate besides humans who live in Taiwan and the human is his greatest enemy. His cute little pouches on the inside of his checks enable him to satisfy his longing for fruit and store it away for consumption once he is back in safe territory. He is hated and hunted by the farmers whose crops he likes to destroy. He does seem to have a knack at destroying the very source of food he most treasures.

Monkey meat is a delicacy in Asia and the Formosan Rock Monkey again finds himself as the only target to fulfill the desire for monkey meat. Since he is the only primate on the island, other than man, he is once again the object of the illegal hunter. This time his only crime is to be thought good to eat by the masses. Again his swiftness and his chubby little cheeks are his only defenses against the hunters and their desires for his meat.

What do you think? If he out runs the angry farmer and stays in the tallest trees away from the hunters wanting his meat, is he now safe? Not quite, now he faces even a greater foe. This one leaves traps and catches him alive. He is then shipped off to research labs the world over to be used in experimentation.  Here he becomes the lab monkey, or a medical guinea pig. Since he is a primate, he is prized for research when a new drug comes out. His system is one of the closest to the human and often drugs are first used on medical monkeys before being released for human trials.

The Formosan Rock Monkey is protected in Taiwan, so if he can outrun all the illegal hunters that are everywhere he can live up to 20 years, making the world a happier place with his sense of humor and antics. So next time you are in Taiwan, take a walk in the bamboo jungles or the temperate rain forest and watch these little fellows play in the tops of the trees.  They will bring joy to your heart.
