Eastern Washington High Desert Life

Eastern Washington is the home of the high desert. What a unique place! The climate in summer is hot and dry. It is not uncommon for temperatures to reach triple digits.  Winters can get quite cold. Winter snow is not uncommon. In fact, in winter, the desert usually gets several feet of snow. When visiting this region keep in mind that the people are rather laid back and dress casually. Even in restaurants you will mostly find people wearing nice jeans and sweaters. You will find little need for formal wear in this area. When packing, remember to include garments that can layer, and anywhere in Washington requires a good rain jacket. Keep in mind that while the days may be hot and dry, the nights will get quite cool.

Anything east of the Cascade Range is considered Eastern Washington.  The second largest city in the state is in this dry desert. Spokane is a hub of activity for the Northeast. What a fun place! Here Shopping abounds.  Spokane also is the largest shopping area for much of Northeastern Washington and the Idaho Panhandle.  Serious shopping is done in Spokane by all. You can find it all in Spokane.  It has an international airport that also serves much of the bordering state of Idaho, especially the Pan Handle. This is a terrific boon to the Washington economy. The mountains provide awesome skiing when the snow arrives. There are many trails for the cross country skier. In summer these same trails keep the hiker happy. Camping is plentiful! Most places allow dry camping most anywhere. If you like nature, there are endless things to do.

Yakima Valley Red Apple Orchards - A red apple sitting on top of a green plant - AppleThe Juniper trees are gorgeous. It is believed the Juniper Woodland is the largest Western Juniper Woodland on earth. The Junipers extend from Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, Idaho, and into Northeastern California.  The Juniper is a slow-growing tree that elbows out other high desert plants like Sagebrush. Sagebrush is needed as habitat for the Sage Grouse. It is beautiful and fun to watch it blow across the desert. Junipers also make it hard for other trees to flourish like the Quaking Aspen, Bitterbrush, and Mountain Mahogany.  Juniper trees often live to be over 1,600 years old. There is one Juniper in Fort Rock, Oregon which is 64 feet tall and 5.5 feet in diameter. This patriarchal Juniper is awesome beauty. All through Eastern Washington, you will see these beautiful and ancient Junipers. They are fantastic! They are ancient! They are the Juniper Tree.

The summer color tones of the Eastern Washington High desert are brown with autumn hues mixed in. The knarly Juniper Tree has a beauty all its own. Even the Sage Brush is gorgeous as it blows across the desert. Nothing though can beat the muted red tones of the Mountain Mahogany. This tree is pure beauty. It is an economic blessing to the region. The high desert is the place to hike and there are many hiking trails. It also provides endless photography. The desert is beautiful! It is a natural photo waiting to happen. Wildlife scurries across the desert floor. The desert is full of life!

Nestled in the valleys of the desert are the rich and fertile farmlands of the Yakima Valley in Eastern Washington. The beautiful  Palouse is in both the Pan Handle of Idaho and Eastern Washington. In these valleys are some of the richest farmland in the state. Most anything grows in these valleys! Not only do they grow bountiful fruits and vegetables, but they are also wonderfully gorgeous. The beautiful Columbia River separates Oregon from Washington. The river provides many summer activities and is gorgeous as she moves through the beautiful gorge that carries her name. Windsurfers and boaters both love the Columbia River.  The Snake River is another major river that snakes her way through the Eastern parts of Oregon and Washington and the tip of Idaho.  She gets her name from her snake appearance. White water rafting is fantastic on the Snake River.

When looking for things to do, don’t forget, what’s in your own backyard. There is fantastic hiking, boating, windsurfing, swimming, rafting, skiing and many photo opportunities for the photographer. Life is great in Eastern Washington. It is fun! It is full of adventure! It is the perfect place for your next family vacation.

Spokane River: Washington USA

Spokane River, “Gateway To The American West,” must be one of the most spectacular rivers in the USA. Just 111 miles long, it is a tributary of the Columbia River. It begins at Idaho’s Lake Coeur d’Alene. This is a magnificent lake in the Pan Handle of Idaho. Leaving Idaho, the Spokane River flows through Spokane, Washington. What amazing beauty! Only a few cities in the US are privileged to have such a beautiful river gorge flow through it’s urban landscape. From here it makes its way to the Columbia River. What a fantastic opportunity this is. The river is extremely gorgeous. Fisherman living in the urban area of Spokane, need not travel far to fish.  Boaters, rafters, canoes with excited paddlers, and many other water sports find fantastic adventure on the Spokane River. The Spokane River is a gem shared by Idaho and Washington. It is an urban river waiting to be explored.

So what is the river like in the city? It flows by an opera house and then through a park at the river’s side. Here you can also witness the magnificent Spokane Falls. If you really want to see the beauty of the  Spokane River go on downstream for about a half mile. Here is where the river begins to make its journey through the beautiful canyon that it calls home for about 8 miles. At this point, you will see some of the most exciting Basalt rock formations. You will see many exciting shapes including the Bowl and Pitcher. There are amazing Basalt cliffs! These cliffs are magnificent. The forest is fantastic with towering evergreens, including the Ponderosa Pine Tree. In this amazing urban playground, you will see beautiful Eagles and Osprey flying above you. How utterly amazing! Just think, you are only a few minutes from downtown Spokane.

Those who enjoy hiking will find many options for beautiful day hikes. When you get to Bowl and Pitcher, cross the swinging bridge and then either choose to hike to the right or the left. Both are short well-marked trails suitable for family outings. These are beautiful and well kept urban trails! All this and more, just outside the city.

Those that want to relax, can do so on its lovely banks. At Spokane River Park, you will find plenty of places to read a book or paint a picture. Bring the whole family and picnic in the park. Dad, there are BBQ grills to grill the catch of the day. The park has wide open places for a good game of volleyball. Whatever your desire, you will find it on the river.

Experienced rafters enjoy the raging white water in the spring and early summer. What a beautiful and fantastic adventure. In the latter summer, the water levels drop for the season and it becomes an easy trip for beginning rafters. You will also see many different ponds and scenic opportunities. The Spokane River is an urban delight. It is perhaps the most beautiful urban river in the United States. Whether you come for the day or a week, there is plenty of action for all, on the Spokane River.

Skagway Alaska Gateway To The North

February 18, 2019 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

Skagway Alaska Gateway To The North

Welcome to Skagway Alaska, the gateway to the Klondike and beyond. Skagway is yesterday alive and well! In Skagway, you will hear the old honky-tonk pianos and the cries of the prospectors. Gold has been found! Nothing much has changed in Skagway, Alaska; it is yesterday at its best! Come celebrate with us! Dance to the old honky-tonk piano! Kick up your heels!  Immerse yourself in the history of the Klondike! Enjoy everything nature has to show you. Skagway is the northernmost town in Southeast Alaska. Skagway sits on the side of a beautiful glacier. Nothing is prettier under the sun.

Skagway Proper

Branch out from here and visit other areas, like Whitehorse in the Yukon, Canada. Skagway is delightful! Skagway is living history! It is fun! Above all, it’s a must-see when you come to Alaska. Check the site below for listings of events and accommodations. We’ll see you in Skagway.
http://skagway.com/

Travel Tour Highlights

One of the highlights of the area is the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. The park was created in 1976 and commemorates all the many hopeful prospectors who flooded the area in the late 1800’s. The visitors center is very informative and the hiking trails are awesome. If you feel ambitious, you can hike the famous Chilkoot Trail. This is a 3-5 day hike and not for beginning hikers. The trail is well maintained by the Park Service and is in good condition. You can access the park website below.

http://www.nps.gov/klgo/index.htm

Skagway is one of the most exciting port of calls for the cruise ships that go up the Inside Passage to Alaska. For example, you can take this cruise out of either Seattle, USA or Vancouver, Canada with other connections. This is one cruise that I have done twice and no two trips are the same. They are an adventure waiting to happen! You can reserve your cruise on the website below.

http://www.alaskacruises.com/cruises/alaska-inside-passage-cruises.html

Other options are the ferry system that travels up the coast. Book your car, the walk-on, your bike, or even your RV. Similarly, it’s much like booking a train, for instance, you can purchase a sleeping berth also. Furthermore, the ferry ships are smaller than cruise ships and seem to be closer to the shoreline allowing different views. This offers more unique photo opportunities and allows you to see different wildlife.

http://www.alaskaferryvacations.com/index.html

There are many fantastic day tours available. Some are as little as one day and others can be ten days. Whatever you desire to see and do, Skagway, Alaska is your jumping off point.

The Art Of Mountain Biking

February 27, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

Mountain Biking

Mastering Mountain Biking At Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

The art of Mountain Biking is a skill that enables you to take a very durable bike, built for cross country and/or trails, and ride off road over the roughest mountain terrain. It can be challenging, but is very rewarding. You can ride trails that are so rough that they are hardly trails. You can take off on your own with just a compass. You can climb mountains and see what most people can not even dream about. When you get off the beaten path or on trails that are barely trails, the vistas grow. What a way to see your world!

Enjoy the deep shade while biking along the trails among the California redwoods. These enormous old growth redwood trees provide a pleasant environment to enjoy mountain biking at it’s best. Monteray County provides some good good riding. Here you will find something for every level of mountain biker. There are many extremly rugged challenges for the experienced mountain biker. One example of this skill level is the trails around Fort Ord Public Lands.  Here you will practice all your skills and them some. Beginners can ride the gentle paved trails of the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail. Whatever your skill level, there is a trail just for you in Monterey County.

The Fort Ord National Monument has bike paths for every age group from families with younger children, to those who are in tip top shape. There are paved trails and rough trails, there are flat trails and mountain terran. Whatever you are looking for, you will find it in the Fort Ord National Monument in Monteray County, California. It really is time to take to the hills.

Another popular ride is the ride at Pebble Beach. The trail goes all the way out to the Lone Cypress and back, One of the best part of the ride is that anyone can navigate it with ease. On your way out, keep the Ocean beaches on your right, and when you ride back they will be on your left.

A more traditional, and slightly more challenging bike route begins near Cannery Row on the Monterey Bay Coastal Bay Recreation Trail. You stay on the trail for a little more than a mile. The trail will then end. Then you can cycle through Pacific Grove and continue past Point Pinos. Then you will enter Sunset Drive just past Asilomar State Beach. It is here that you will see Pebble Beach for the first time and 17 Mile drive. Then you will continue on to Lone Cypress. What an amazing day!

Wherever you decide to go riding, you will find a good challenging ride for your skill level in Monteray County, California. Biking adventures are everywhere. Why not make this the year you discover the adventure of the California Redwoods.? What are you waiting for?  Grab your bag and head on out to your favorite trail head for an enjoyable day of riding in the California Sun.

Reaching High At Safari Park

High Expectations At The San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park is a world leader in conservation and assistance to animals, reptiles, and birds who find themselves on the endangered species list. Like this giraffe, their standards and expectations are high.  With high confidence, their success rate with the endangered species of the world has been phenomenal. Join us as we take a peak into the world of the giraffe, another one of the amazing animals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

The giraffe is an amazing creature with legs that are around six feet long and an enormous neck that is also around six feet. Not only do they have very long necks, but their necks weigh around 600 pounds. Can you imagine carrying that around all day? The giraffe carries that and a whole lot more day after day. It can be said that they have a very large heart, as their heart weighs almost 25 pounds. Now that is a very big heart!

The San Diego Zoo currently has a nice size heard of Masai Giraffes that share the Urban Jungle Exhibit with a heard of Nubian Soemmering’s gazelles. This brings a lot of excitement to the area. The Masai Giraffe is not on the endangered species list, but their numbers in Africa are dwindaling. The Masai Giraffe can be identified by it’s large liver colored spots outlined with wide white lines. This is the giraffe that is seen in most zoos world wide and is the most common.

The Safari Park Exhibit has two herds of giraffes  the Uganda Giraffes with their large, brown blobs of color separated by beige lines that are a little thicker than other species. The other herd is the Reticulated Giraffe. While the Reticulated Giraffe is native to Somalia, it is now found only in northern Kenya. It has a beautiful dark coat with narrow white lines, that almost look like a spider web.

At the San Diego Safari Park, as well as the zoo, giraffes are fed in very high food trees. This prevents others from coming along and eating all their food. The giraffe is a very slow eater and it takes all day for them to fill their stomach. A healthy giraffe in the wild eats about 75 pounds of Acacia leaves and other things that may be around. At the Wildlife Park, they eat a variety of things including Acacia leaves, hay, carrots, and some special biscuits made just for them. These biscuits are very low in starch and high in fiber. If you are there at feeding time, you can buy biscuits to feed to individual giraffes. Can you imagine getting close enough to a giraffe to feed him or her? Life is an adventure at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park.

So what are you waiting for? Isn’t it time you took a look around your own back yard? While it is quite an adventure to travel to other lands, America has some outstanding places to see and things to do. Why not make your next family adventure an America exploration?  Check out the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. Spend a few days and explore all the many San Diego places of interest. San Diego has lots to see and do. Why not pack your bag and head on out to the zoo. The animals are waiting.

It’s a small world after all

It’s a small world after all
It’s a small world after all
It’s a small world after all
It’s a small, small world

There is just one moon and one golden sun
And a smile means friendship to everyone
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide
It’s a small world after all

It’s a small world after all
It’s a small world after all
It’s a small world after all
It’s a small, small world

Join the happiest cruise in the world. Sail around the globe, meeting new friends as you go. Of course you will also see old friends as you all join together to sing the songs of the season. As you sail from the Alps, to the tropics, to the deserts and the plains. You will be singing the theme song in each language. How amazing to sing it in Spanish with the happiest Mexicans in the world.

So while you are at Disneyland California, USA, catch the next boat for a world cruise. Sing this famous song in English and Spanish and five other languages of the world. Sing with the French and get excited with the Germans.   Relish the Peruvian reed flutes and keep the beat with the Tahitian drums. This is one of the most popular exhibits that Disney ever did. It is so well attended and relished that every park has one modeled after the California Park.  If you have never been to “It’s a Small World,” then get ready for a treat. Get your dancing shoes on and your singing voice tuned up, as It is a Small World After All.

Pomegranates Are A Powerhouse Of Health

October 1, 2015 by Exploretraveler.com 1 Comment

Pomegranates

Pomegranates Are A Powerhouse Of Health

Pomegranates, a powerhouse of nutrition, are an American Treat. Travel through Southern California and you will see the many fields of this beautiful fruit. What amazing beauty! This is a fruit that is bright red and filled with many seeds. What a beautiful fruit! At first glance you wonder how to eat anything quite like this. The first question is always, “do I eat the seeds?”  Some people choose to eat the fruit off the seeds and then spit the seed out. Other people eat the seed and all. Both are correct, it is just personal preference. The seeds however, carry a powerhouse of nutrition in their own right.

As you are traveling through California, consider stopping at a fruit stand. Enjoy some of the countless fruits that you see growing on the side of the road. California has many different fruits that grow in it’s warm Mediterranean climate. Some of them are the more familiar and then there are those surrounded with mystery. Here are just a few reasons to reach out for the mysterious Pomegranate. Pomegranates have a spectacular supply of health benefits. They help keep you well! They keep your skin young!  They balance your moods! The secrets of the California Pomegranate are far reaching.

The pomegranate is one of the oldest known fruits on earth. You can find pictures and stories of pomegranates in the writings and artifacts of many ancient cultures. It is a native of Persia! The Egyptians understood its many benefits in ancient times. This nutrient dense,  mysterious  fruit has often found itself as a symbol of health and fertility. Many cultures consider it a key to a long life. So what is so great about this funky-looking red fruit?

Pomegranates have a compound called punicalagin. It has been shown to benefit our heart and blood vessels. It is also the reason pomegranates have such  antioxidant and health benefits. It not only works to lower cholesterol, but also blood pressure. What an amazing benefit! They are also a secret weapon for melting away heart blockages.  In a country where Heart disease is a major problem, how is it that the pomegranates is still so mysterious?  Not only are pomegranates good for your heart and blood vessels but they have been shown to inhibit the growth of many cancers. They help to prevent vascular changes that promote tumor growth.

You do not have to travel to California to find the pomegranate. But while in California, lets embark on a pomegranate exploration. Today, as we are looking at all the beautiful fields of red pomegranates, it is time to uncover the mystery. This is the pomegranate adventure!

Fall is the time to harvest all those beautiful red fruits. You will find plenty of fresh pomegranates in the produce section of most markets. However, the freshest pomegranates will come from the small road-side stands on the highways of California. Here they are fresh, having just been picked. You will also often find fresh bottled Pomegranate Juice in these little stands. All Pomegranate Juice is delicious, but the fresh juices sold at the road-side markets are the best.

So other than sitting around and trying to get the fruit off a bunch of tiny seeds, what do you do with this fruit? My personal favorite is to use the fresh fruit and make fresh juice. For this though, you need a good juicer that will separate the seeds from the fruit. After that is done, here are a few ideas to get you going.

Antioxidant Rich Smoothie *
Serves: 2 Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:
8 cups organic baby spinach or kale
1 cup pomegranate  juice  (fresh or bottled)
1 cup blueberries, frozen or fresh
1 cup strawberries, frozen or fresh
8 fresh dates, cut in half
2 tablespoons flax seeds, ground
1/2 avocado

Instructions:
Blend all ingredients together. This is delicious & very healthy!

*Taken from the library of Dr. Fuhrman with a few adaptions for my use

This smoothie is excellent to start your day with. I usually have enough that I use half for breakfast and the other part for lunch. It is delicious! It is filling! It is nutritious!

HIBISCUS-POMEGRANATE ICED TEA***

Makes: 8 servings, about 1 cup each

Active Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 2 hours 10 minutes (including 2 hours chilling time)

INGREDIENTS

1/4 cup loose Hibiscus Tea leaves—I like the fresh leaves off my Hibiscus Tea Plant

4 cups boiling water

1 cup Pomegranate Juice

4 cups cold water

Lemon or lime wedges for garnish

*** This is also good with Fig leaves or Jasmine Leaves instead of Hibiscus Tea Leaves

This tea is one of my favorite thirst quenchers on a hot summer day. I also like to add a touch of Green Tea sometimes. This is a fun recipe! It is a marvelous tea. It is one that is very adaptable! Enjoy!

POMEGRANATE WATER

Take 8 cups of cold water

1 cup Pomegranate Juice

Mix and chill.

Fruit waters are a must have in my refrigerator! I usually keep two or three different flavors at a time. It is a marvelous way to stay hydrated. It has very little juice, so it is awesome for those watching their weight! It is a fun way to drink your water! What a splendid drink for a hot summer’s day!

Now that you have a few ideas to start with, it is time for a pomegranate adventure. Now is the time to travel on down to Southern California. The pomegranates are being harvested! The juices are freshly made. The fields full of  ripe red fruits are everywhere! And those California sunsets, are magnificent!
